India - part revisited after 25 years

Writer: Keith OrchardKeith Orchard

My brother and I had a flying trip to India in January a country we visited back several times 25 year ago + , chasing the last of the live steam on the main lines...an adventure to say the least, and we have always wanted to go back, Visiting Calcutta, where there are still trams running (JUST) , although they were stopped last year! A manufacture hand making brass locomotives and rolling stock, we managed to ride the Darjeeling line from NJP to Darjeeling which was closed 25 years ago due to a major landslide closing operations on the lower section, beside the "Toytrain" ride up at the top steam hauld. The line although it has world heritage status - is operated as a working operation and so sadly is not cared for to standards expected as say our Heritage lines offer. A trip down from Shimla passing the diesel rail car on its was up on a "Special Charter" and a couple of museums around Delhi made it a very railway oriented trip - so sorry for any delays in shipping orders !!
